Some people have a unique way of looking at the world which then allows them to bring about solutions that other individuals might never have considered. Betsy DeVos is the Secretary of Education and the head of the Department of Education. A prominent member of President Trump’s high-profile administration, Betsy DeVos is admittedly one of the less recognizable names on his staff. With that being said, Betsy DeVos has been hard at work for over 30 years in an attempt to establish her clout and command respect in the field of education reform. Now, with a high-ranking Federal position on her resume, Betsy DeVos has the chance to bring change to America that conservatives can believe in and she is going to do it by embracing the role of school choice.
If you haven’t heard of school choice then you are on the outside, looking in, at one of the biggest changes in conservative education reform in recent memory. School choice was popularized, initially at least, by Milton Friedman more than 50 years ago. Friedman wrote ‘The Role of Government in Education’ and, in doing so, fundamentally changed the outlook of countless people to follow. Friedman, like all conservatives, questioned the role that the government should play in the personal lives of the American people and this, naturally, extended to the concept of education. While Friedman was the first person to discuss school choice, it was Betsy DeVos who took the subject and ran with it.
Betsy DeVos and her husband, Dick DeVos, have been hard at work as they’ve attempted to change the conversation surrounding education reform. For decades there has been a common refrain echoing out from Washington D.C.: Something needs to change. With that being said, nothing has changed in recent years and now President Trump and Betsy DeVos are going to be attempting to break this pattern forever. Betsy DeVos is more optimistic than ever, according to her own words, that change is coming and who wouldn’t believe her?
Betsy DeVos came to the idea of school choice quite by accident. Years ago, she and her husband had been looking for a place to educate their children. Doing the tour of different facilities, the DeVos family would end up visiting the Potter’s House Christian School. This particular facility had been engaged with serving Grand Rapids’ vulnerable, low-income families for more than 30 years. DeVos said that her instant, first impression, was that the facility was electric with ‘curiosity, with love for one another’. Her instant belief in the school would be instrumental in her decision to carry out disseminating the subject on a wider level.
You only have to look at the current state of education in America in order to understand that something is in need of changing. American students are falling behind their global competition and this is causing a real rift for the future of America. With Betsy DeVos steering the ship as Secretary of Education, there might finally be some real and positive change coming for these kids.
